Puerto Vallarta Travel Guide:
Beaches, Tips + What to Expect

My wife and I have been coming to Puerto Vallarta for over 14 years now. In fact, it was the first international trip we ever took together. If you’ve heard it described as a romantic, relaxing destination with friendly local people, that’s absolutely true.

What makes it special is the balance. There’s plenty to do if you want activity, but it can also be incredibly relaxing at the same time. Some of the best food we’ve experienced anywhere has been here, and we’ve returned many times over the years. Even though it continues to grow in popularity, once you leave the airport, everything shifts into a much more laid-back and enjoyable vibe.

Puerto Vallarta is one of those destinations that blends beach relaxation with culture, food, and a lively atmosphere. It’s popular for a reason, but it still manages to feel more authentic and relaxed than many other tourist hotspots.

Whether you're planning a trip or just exploring your options, or even wondering how people are able to win a free vacation, here’s what you should know before you go.

What Makes Puerto Vallarta Unique

Puerto Vallarta offers a mix of traditional Mexican charm and modern resort living.

You’ll find:

  • Beautiful beaches along Banderas Bay
  • A walkable downtown area (Zona Romántica)
  • Local markets, shops, and restaurants
  • Resorts and all-inclusive options

It’s a destination where you can relax, explore, or do a bit of both.

Best Areas to Stay

Where you stay can shape your experience.

  • Hotel Zone: Close to resorts, beaches, and easy access to everything
  • Zona Romántica: More local feel, great food, nightlife, and walkability
  • Marina Vallarta: Quieter, with a more relaxed atmosphere

Each area offers a slightly different vibe depending on what you're looking for.

Best Time to Visit

Puerto Vallarta is a year-round destination, but timing can affect your experience.

Winter (Peak Season)

  • Best weather
  • Most popular time to visit
  • Higher prices and more crowds

Spring & Fall

  • Fewer crowds
  • Good balance of weather and pricing
  • Great time for a relaxed visit

Summer

  • Warmer temperatures and more humidity
  • Occasional rain
  • Fewer tourists and lower prices

Getting Around

Puerto Vallarta is fairly easy to navigate.

  • Walking works well in central areas
  • Taxis and rideshare are widely available
  • Buses are affordable and commonly used

Most visitors combine walking with short rides.

Things to Do

There’s a wide range of activities depending on your travel style.

Some popular options include:

  • Relaxing on the beach
  • Exploring the Malecón (boardwalk)
  • Taking a boat trip or snorkeling tour
  • Trying local food and street tacos
  • Visiting nearby towns like Sayulita

You can keep things simple or fill your days with activities.

Is Puerto Vallarta Worth Visiting?

For many travelers, yes.

Puerto Vallarta offers a balance of relaxation, culture, and entertainment without feeling overly commercial. It’s a great option whether you’re traveling solo, as a couple, or with family.
