Travel Tip: Carry 2 wallets

Why I Travel With Two Wallets

Over the years, I've developed a travel habit that I now consider absolutely essential: I travel with two wallets.

It might sound a little strange at first, but ever since I started doing it, I honestly wonder how I ever traveled any other way.

For me, it adds an extra layer of convenience, organization, and peace of mind while traveling.
And the best part is that it costs almost nothing to set up.

The Two-Wallet System

The idea is simple. I keep my primary wallet secured in the hotel room, usually in the room safe or another secure location.

Then I carry a second wallet with me when I'm out exploring during the day or night.

That smaller wallet becomes my "daily carry" wallet.

Instead of carrying everything I own around town, I only bring the essentials I actually need. If I lose it, misplace it, or run into an unexpected situation, I haven't lost every important document and card I brought on the trip.

What Changed My Thinking

I first started taking this more seriously after a trip to Costa Rica. While I was there, a police officer explained that visitors should have identification available if requested by authorities.

That conversation made me think much more carefully about what I carry when I'm traveling internationally.

Since then, I've gotten into the habit of carrying identification and important travel essentials in a separate wallet while leaving backup items secured in the room.

That simple change has worked extremely well for me.

What I Keep In My Travel Wallet

Everyone's situation is different, but my travel wallet typically contains:

  • Driver's License
  • A Copy of My Passport
  • One Credit Card
  • Hotel Room Key
  • Insurance Card
  • Emergency Contact Information
  • A Small Amount of Cash

The goal is to have enough with me to comfortably get through the day without carrying everything I own.

Some travelers may prefer carrying their actual passport depending on local requirements, but it's always wise to research the rules of the country you're visiting before you travel.

Why I Like Carrying Only One Credit Card

One thing I've learned is that there's usually no reason for me to carry every credit card I own while exploring a destination.

If I only need one card during the day, that's usually all I bring. The remaining cards stay secured back at the hotel.

This way, if something unexpected happens, I haven't put all my eggs in one basket.

It's a simple habit, but it helps me feel much more comfortable while traveling.

The Wallet I Use Costs Less Than Lunch

One thing I like about this system is that it doesn't require any expensive gear.

The travel wallets I use are simple aluminum card holders that I purchased on eBay for less than $5 with free shipping.

Many are marketed with names similar to: "Pocket Waterproof Business ID Credit Card Wallet Holder Aluminum Metal RFID Case"

While I wouldn't necessarily call them completely waterproof, I've found them to be quite water-resistant and surprisingly durable.

Another thing I like is that if I happen to get my feet wet walking into the surf, get splashed near the pool, or get caught in a brief rain shower, the water-resistant construction helps protect the contents inside. I still wouldn't intentionally submerge it in water, but for everyday travel situations, it has performed very well.

These are:

  • Lightweight
  • Compact
  • Tough
  • Inexpensive
  • Easy to Slip Into a Pocket

They also come in a variety of colors and patterns, which makes them easy to identify.

For a few dollars, they've proven to be one of the better travel purchases I've made.

Sometimes I Like Traveling Light

I know many people rely heavily on their phones while traveling, and there are certainly advantages to having one with you.

Photos, maps, translations, and travel apps can all be incredibly useful.

But sometimes I enjoy walking around with as little as possible.

There are days when I simply want to:

  • Explore
  • Walk the beach
  • Visit shops
  • Grab lunch
  • Enjoy the scenery

without feeling like I'm carrying half my life with me.

Having a dedicated travel wallet allows me to keep important information organized and accessible without needing to constantly rely on my phone for everything.

Small Habits Can Make Travel Easier

One thing I've noticed about experienced travelers is that they often develop small systems that make trips run more smoothly.

For me, the two-wallet system is one of those habits.

It's simple, it's inexpensive and it gives me a little extra confidence knowing that I'm protecting important documents while still carrying what I need for the day.

This concludes one of my most useful travel tips and a habit that I now use on virtually every trip. It's simple, inexpensive, and gives me confidence knowing that I have what I need for the day while keeping my most important items safely secured elsewhere, and I honestly can't imagine traveling any other way.
