Myrtle Beach Getaway made easy!

Myrtle Beach Travel Guide

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina has a completely different feel compared to the West Coast, and honestly, that’s part of what makes it so enjoyable.

Even though we live near the beaches in Southern California, I can’t help but be a little jealous of how warm the ocean water gets in South Carolina.

In Southern California, the water usually stays fairly cool year-round. But in Myrtle Beach, the water often feels surprisingly warm and comfortable, especially during the summer months. For people like us who enjoy bodyboarding, jumping through waves, swimming, and spending long stretches of time in the ocean, that warm water makes a huge difference.

There’s something fun and refreshing about being on the East Coast instead of the West Coast. Even though it’s still the United States, it almost feels like stepping into a different world with its own atmosphere, traditions, food, and personality.

One of the Easiest Beach Destinations to Navigate

One thing we really enjoy about Myrtle Beach is how simple and convenient the area feels once you arrive. We don’t even bother renting a car.

After getting dropped off from the airport, much of what we enjoy is within walking distance:

  • Beaches
  • Restaurants
  • Shops
  • Attractions
  • Entertainment areas

That makes the trip feel more relaxing and less stressful compared to destinations where you constantly need to drive around or deal with parking.

There are also plenty of tours and excursions nearby that are easy to book without needing to travel far.

Myrtle Beach Is More Than Just the Beach

Of course, the beach is the main attraction, but there’s actually a surprising amount to do beyond simply sitting in the sand.

Some popular activities include:

  • Boardwalk attractions
  • Mini golf
  • Live entertainment
  • Fishing excursions
  • Dolphin cruises
  • Museums
  • Shopping areas
  • Family attractions

It’s one of those destinations that can work well for:

  • Couples
  • Families
  • Groups of friends
  • Retirees

all at the same time.

The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk Still Has Old-School Charm

One thing I enjoy about Myrtle Beach is that parts of it still have a slightly old-fashioned beach-town atmosphere.

You still get:

  • Beach arcades
  • Boardwalk energy
  • Casual seafood spots
  • Souvenir shops
  • Family-style attractions

There’s something nostalgic and comforting about it that reminds me of classic American beach vacations.

At the same time, newer restaurants, attractions, and entertainment areas continue popping up, so the area still feels active and evolving.

Surprisingly Good Food and Restaurants

Myrtle Beach has no shortage of restaurants, especially if you enjoy:

  • Seafood
  • Southern-style cooking
  • Barbecue
  • Casual beach dining

And because the area attracts visitors from all over the country, there’s also a surprisingly wide variety of food choices available.

Some of our favorite moments are honestly just casual dinners after a long beach day while watching the evening atmosphere around town.

South Carolina Wine Country Is Quietly Growing

One thing that surprised me over the years is seeing wineries and wine tours starting to emerge more throughout South Carolina.

When I first heard about South Carolina becoming more involved in winemaking, I honestly didn’t expect much. But apparently the climate has gradually become more favorable for vineyards in some areas over recent decades.

Now there are actually several enjoyable winery experiences and wine tours available not too far from Myrtle Beach.

For adults looking for something different from the beach scene, it can make for a fun day trip and a nice change of pace.

Plenty for Kids to Enjoy

Myrtle Beach also works very well as a family destination.

Beyond the ocean itself, there are endless kid-friendly activities including:

  • Water parks
  • Arcades
  • Mini golf courses
  • Aquariums
  • Family entertainment centers
  • Beach activities

Sometimes simply spending a full day by the ocean together ends up being the highlight of the trip.

Myrtle Beach Can Still Be a Good Value

Compared to some major beach destinations, Myrtle Beach can still offer relatively good value if you plan carefully.

You can often save money by:

  • Traveling slightly outside peak summer weeks
  • Staying a short walk from the beach instead of directly oceanfront
  • Booking accommodations early
  • Avoiding holiday weekends when possible

Because so much is concentrated in one area, it’s also easier to avoid constantly spending money on transportation.

Myrtle Beach Just Keeps Calling Us Back

For us, Myrtle Beach is one of those destinations that feels easy to enjoy.

The warm ocean water, walkable atmosphere, family-friendly energy, and relaxed beach-town feeling all come together in a way that makes the trip feel comfortable and memorable.

Every destination has its own personality, and Myrtle Beach has a charm that feels very different from the West Coast in the best possible way.

Sometimes simply experiencing a different part of the country can make travel feel exciting all over again.
